Caritas dioceses Mostar Duvno and Trebinje Mrkan within International day for disaster risk reduction gathered pupils from primary and secondary schools in Mostar region to give them certificates for successfully finished education on Disaster risk reduction and to implement evacuation exercise in Emaus Spiritual and education centre close to Mostar. The education, duration 15 hours, on which participated as educators experts from Civil defence, Fire department, First Aid, Mountain service, Doctors and Caritas with teachers, in region Mostar more than 100 pupils got knowledge about subject that are at this moment very popular, like fires, floods, earthquakes, preparedness and vulnerability, as well as their activation in local communities. The evacuation exercise led by fire department from this local community had aim to raise awareness among children of danger from fires, and their behaviour if they are in direct or indirect danger. Fire brigade organized in controlled environment fire and allowed children to use fire extinguisher.
Disaster risk reduction days continued in Tuzla, where Caritas Archdiocese Vrhbosna organized together with Fire department, Civil defence, doctors and Red Cross evacuation exercise in primary and secondary school, Catholic school centre Tuzla. During simulation of earthquake and localized fire experts showed to all participants importance of organized evacuation from a building after disaster. Children, teachers and volunteers as actors participated in role of injured persons during evacuation. Each step, responsible from Civil defence and Fire department explained all steps taken during the exercise, so everyone could feel and understand what is happening.
The similar exercise implemented in primary school “Aleksa Šantić” in Banja Luka, by Caritas Banja Luka together with school staff, fire brigade and volunteers from Red Cross. This has been opportunity for school management to learn more about preparedness and to be aware of defects around the school. Our kindergarten group from Maslačak kindergarten in Banja Luka, led by Larisa Klepac, one of Herman teachers from Caritas also participated in this exercise. After simulation, children had opportunity to ask questions about the work of firefighters.
This evacuation in Banja Luka have been the last activity within DRR days of Caritas within International DRR day. During these activities participated more than 400 children, 30 teachers and professors, more than 50 persons from fire brigades, civil defence, volunteers from Red Cross and doctors, and Caritas staff working in this field.
